Opposition parties in Montenegro dropped the initiative to vote no confidence in Zdravko Krivokapic’s government. The opposition failed to secure the vote it needed from the ruling parties to overthrow the government.
As reported, the reason was the warning of the ruling party, the Democratic Front (DF) to submit the initiative to shorten the mandate of Parliament, which it had announced on Saturday, December 10th. The DF said that they will also request the organization of extraordinary elections. However, this proposal was not accepted by the ruling coalition partners.
Out of 81 deputies in the Montenegrin Parliament, the initiative for the no-confidence motion of the Government was signed by only 40 opposition deputies from the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), the Social Democratic Party and minority parties.
The ruling parties, which have 41 deputies, announced they would not join the initiative. The Democratic Front, which has been seeking the overthrow of the government for months, said it did not want Milo Djukanovic’s Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) to overthrow Prime Minister Krivokapic.
The opposition initiative for a no-confidence motion against the Government stated that Montenegro is already in the biggest political and institutional crisis in the last 30 years and that the Krivokapi Qever Government has lost its legitimacy as it does not have the support of the majority that voted for it.
It was also said that it was the Government’s fault that the talks with the European Union were in principle suspended. The opposition tried to materialize the dissatisfaction with the work of the Government of the ruling parties, but also the internal troubles of the majority.
One of these problems is that the numerous proposals of the Krivokapic Government remain in Parliament without being put to a vote, due to a lack of support.
Also, for several months now, the political conflict between the ruling parties continues, especially the Democratic Front and the Civic Movement Bridge, as several times, the Bridge votes in Parliament together with the opposition led by the DPS.
The latest such case was the election of Nikola Mugosha as chairman of the Central Election Commission on December 8th.
Krivokapic’s government was voted on December 4, 2020 with the votes of MPs from the Democratic Front, this pro-Serbian party, the Bridge Movement and the Democrats, who won the elections in August 2020, thus’s Djukanovic’s Democratic Party of Socialists after three decades. rel
