David Bennett, 57-year-old pig heart patient passed away on Tuesday.
It remains unclear what caused his death. In January, a team of surgeons in the US managed for the first time to successfully transplant a patient a pig heart. The animal organ, which doctors had initially genetically modified, was transplanted to 57-year-old David Bennett.
Bennett suffered from a life-threatening heart disease and had only two options: the death or heart of a pig. He started getting worse in the last few days until he passed away.
Researchers are planning to conduct a forensic examination of his death and publish the results in a peer-reviewed journal.
