Six-time Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the world’s most influential celebrities in environmental advocacy and climate change debate, is now a scientist.
In Netflix’s latest film, “Don’t Look Up”, he plays a scientist who realizes that, although he has discovered that a large comet is heading towards Earth, the general public and the authorities will not do nothing about it.
According to DiCaprio, “Don’t Look Up” is “an analogy of modern culture and our inability to hear scientific truth.”
If that hits you, it’s probably because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hollywood star makes clear how humanity faces imminent danger and how world leaders react to it.
In the film, DiCaprio’s character is not the only one praying for the survival of mankind. He is joined by Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), a Michigan student who discovered the comet, and Teddy Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), head of the United States Planetary Defense Coordination Office.
The trio’s claims, however, are met with skepticism by the President’s office and the general public, as no one wants to hear gloomy news and prefers to believe that everything will go well.
According to film director Adam McKay, the goal was to convey the urgency of climate change by letting people laugh, as he thought comedy could help unify different political views.
“After the last five to 10 crazy years we’ve all had it all over the planet, my feeling was ‘God, wouldn’t it be nice to laugh at some of these events,'” McKay said.
It was a recent attempt to get citizens interested in the imminent end of our days on Earth due to the climate crisis.
It has to do with the difficulties of forcing the uninterested to care, in the concrete example of a giant comet heading towards Earth that could at the same time bring about the extinction of humanity.
