The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli has passed away at the age of 65. The news was announced to the media by his spokesman.
The politician had been seriously ill for more than two weeks, canceling all activities. Sassoli was hospitalized in Italy last month due to serious complications with his immune system.
“Sassoli passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at a hospital in Aviano,” his spokesman Roberto Cuillo wrote on Twitter.
In September last year he was admitted to a hospital in Strasbourg where he was treated for pneumonia. After leaving the hospital, the Italian returned to duty in November.
David Sassoli used to be a journalist then got involved in politics.
