The President of the United Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, was received by the French Minister of Defense Sebastien Lecornu, on his first state visit as president.
Mohamed bin Zayed arrived in Paris yesterday, on his first visit abroad, on the agenda of which are energy and transport issues.
Today he met with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee presidential palace.
His visit follows US President Joe Biden’s tour of the Middle East, as Western powers demand that Riyadh and the UAE increase oil production.
A main issue of the visit is “the guarantees that will be given by the Emirates for the amount of hydrocarbons that will be supplied to France”, a Macron adviser told the AFP network.
Emirates oil exports to France in 2019 reached 1.5 billion euros, but currently the country is no longer supplying Paris.
Paris says it seeks to “diversify its sources of supply in the context of the war in Ukraine”, Elysee sources add.
During his three-day visit, agreements are expected to be signed and the contract is for the transport and waste sector.
Relations between the two countries have increased greatly in recent years, French media reports.
The United Arab Emirates has the only foreign branch of the Louvre Museum, and in December signed a contract to buy 80 Rafale fighter jets for 14 billion euros.
