The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in cooperation with the United Nations is conducting an operation to evacuate civilians from Mariupol and the besieged Azovstal steel plant.
According to CNN, the ICRC has confirmed that the evacuation started yesterday, while no details were given so as not to jeopardize the continuity of work.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in a Twitter post today that the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal has begun.
“The first group of about 100 people is already heading to the controlled area”said Zelensky.
Through a Telegram, the Mariupol City Council called on civilians to gather at a set time near a shopping mall in the southern region of Zaporizhia.
“If you have relatives or acquaintances in Mariupol, try to contact them by all means. Call, send messages and say that it is possible to go to Zaporozhzhia, where it is safe“, Said the Council.
Approximately 100,000 people are still in Mariupol, although much of the city has been devastated by weeks of bombing and airstrikes by Russian forces.
