The Russian embassy in Switzerland has issued a legal threat to a local newspaper that published a caricature of President Vladimir Putin with a red clown nose and rainbow stripes on his face, sources said.
The embassy in its announcement over the weekend condemned the Neue Zürcher Zeitung daily for publishing the image in a July 9 article about the role of memes and digital messages in the context of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, according to the American daily Washington Post.
The article, titled “Between Superheroes and Villains: The Power of Memes in Ukraine’s War,” shows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wearing a Captain America-style superhero costume, while Putin has a red clown nose and rainbow color in the face.
The Russian embassy said: “If we are going to talk about the clown, it would be more appropriate to consider Mr. Zelensky’s past as a comedian.”
“We believe that freedom of expression is not at all compatible with the freedom to spread insults and fake news,” according to the Swiss daily. swissinfo which justified that Putin’s meme was previously published on the Twitter network.
As for the colored stripes on the face, the embassy said that Putin “is a person of Orthodox faith and defends the preservation of Christian values in Russian society (so he is not a fan of the LGBT community),” according to the Washington Post.
