The editor-in-chief of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta sold his Nobel Peace Prize medal at auction for $ 103.5 million.
All the money from the sale will go to help refugees from the war in Ukraine, said Dmitry Muratov.
“We hope this will serve as a mobilization for other people to auction off their valuable assets, their heritage, to help Ukrainian refugees around the world.”
Muratov was awarded the 2021 Peace Prize for defending freedom of expression in Russia.
Novaya Gazeta suspended its operations in March, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine.
This came after Moscow said anyone who described Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a “war” would face heavy fines or closure. The Kremlin calls the conflict a “special military operation.”
“My country invaded another country, Ukraine. There are now 15.5 million refugees. “We thought for a long time about what we could do and we thought that everyone should donate something dear to them, important to them,” Muratov said when announcing his decision.
Muratov is the longtime co-founder and editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, a Kremlin-critical newspaper founded in 1993 with Nobel Peace Prize money.
