The Kremlin has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi on January 19 in Moscow, while negotiations are underway to revive the nuclear deal that Tehran signed with the world powers in 2015.
This will mark Rice’s third visit outside Iran – after Tajikistan and neighboring Turkmenistan – since taking office in August 2021.
This also marks the first meeting of an Iranian president in Russia since 2017.
Moscow and Tehran have strong political, economic and military ties and are allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his war-torn state.
Putin and Raisi will discuss “a number of issues in the framework of bilateral cooperation,” including the 2015 nuclear deal that provides for the lifting of Western sanctions in exchange for limiting Tehran’s nuclear program, the Kremlin said in a statement.
The Iranian side has said that Raisi will leave on January 19 for a two-day trip to Russia, together with the ministers of oil, economy and foreign affairs.
The nuclear deal began not to be implemented until when former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the deal and reinstated sanctions, pushing Tehran to violate the pact.
Since last year, Iran has been negotiating with other signatory states – Britain, France, Russia, China, Germany – and the United States indirectly to revive the agreement, but negotiations have been suspended for nearly five months. the time when Iran held the presidential election.
One of the key issues in the talks is the return of the US to the agreement and the lifting of sanctions, so that Iran can fully implement this pact.
