A sailor who fell into the sea survived being caught after a “piece of sea debris”, his son has revealed.
Vidam Perevertilov spent 14 hours in the water after falling from the cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean in the early hours of the morning. The 52-year-old, who was not wearing a life jacket, praised his decision to swim to a “black spot” a few kilometers away, saving his life. It turned out to be a fishing boat, which he held until his rescue. “He looked about 20 years older and very tired, but he was alive,” said his son.
Perevertilov is the Lithuanian Silver Supporter chief engineer who was making a supply between New Zealand’s Tauranga port and the isolated British territory of Pitcairn. After a change in the engine room pumping fuel, he felt “hot and dizzy,” his son said. He then decked out around 4:00 a.m. on Feb. 16, before falling. After trying to stay afloat until sunrise, Perevertilov noticed a black spot on the horizon and decided to swim towards it.
It took the ship’s crew about six hours to realize that their engineer was missing, and at that moment the captain returned the ship.
