Greek health authorities have confirmed the second case of monkey pox in the country.
It is about a 47-year-old man, who had recently traveled to Spain. As of Saturday evening he is being treated in isolation and in stable condition.
The first tests were performed at the Central Laboratory and it was confirmed that the patient is positive by the National Health Organization EODY. The genetic material was also sent to the Microbiology laboratory of the Aristotle University Medical School in Thessaloniki for further genetic identification and analysis.
The first case in Greece was confirmed four days ago, again in a 59-year-old person
who had recently traveled to Portugal .Both patients are treated in isolation in hospital and are in stable condition.
The World Health Organization confirms that the total number of cases of monkey pox in the world has gone up to over 1478 (1000 only in western and southwestern European countries) and the three countries with the highest number of confirmed cases are Britain (366). , Spain (275) and Portugal (209).
In Greece, the National Organization of Public Health states that so far no case of the disease has been found infected by local patients. Meanwhile, the Greek authorities have decided that every Thursday there will be public information about the cases of monkey pox.
However, they reiterate that according to available epidemiological data, the risk to the general population is still low, as the disease is characterized by relatively low transmission, but population movements in the summer for tourism, especially in Greece, are expected to exacerbate the problem.
