British media BBC has agreed to pay “substantial” damages to the former nanny of Princes William and Harry over “false and malicious” claims that she had an affair with Prince Charles and terminated a pregnancy, claims made by the journalist Martin Bashir.
Last year, a report revealed that Bashir “tricked and induced” Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, into securing a bombshell Panorama interview with him in 1995, according to Sthis News.
As part of this process, Bashir allegedly lied about Alexandra Pettifer – then known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke, telling Earl Spencer that she was having an affair with the heir to the throne.
BBC director general Tim Davie said the state broadcaster had “let (Diana), the royal family and the audience down.
Pettifer said she was one of “many people whose lives were damaged by the deceptive way in which the program was made.”
Diana was upset with her children’s nanny
Louise Prince, Pettifer’s lawyer, said the allegations against her client included “very serious and completely unfounded allegations that she had an affair with the Prince of Wales, including a pregnancy which was terminated”.
The lawyer continued: The plaintiff did not have an affair with the Prince of Wales, was not pregnant with his child and did not have an abortion.
Princess Diana was affected by the claims, Ms Prince said, becoming “aware of a possible relationship of theirs in late 1995”.
“William and Harry’s late mother was upset with Pettifer for no apparent reason“, Ms. Prince told the Supreme Court.
The difficult situation caused Mrs. Pettifer to become “upset and confused.”“, continued the lawyer.
“She felt she had to prove to others that the allegations were untrue by revealing very sensitive matters, including private medical information. Diana, Princess of Wales could not be persuaded, even when presented with incontrovertible evidence.”
The family has faced ‘suspicion and disbelief to this day’
There were numerous comments causing Ms Pettifer anxiety, Ms Prince said.
“False facts were very prominently published in the national press at the time and repeated over 25 years.”
“Both she and her family have continued to face suspicion and mistrust to this day. A long shadow has been cast over relationships with people near and dear to him.”
Ms Prince said the allegations appear to have arisen “in the context of BBC Panorama’s efforts to secure an exclusive interview with Diana, Princess of Wales”.
In court this morning, BBC representatives apologized to Ms Pettifer and agreed to pay damages.
They said: The BBC admits that the allegations made against her were completely unfounded, should never have been made, and that the BBC did not, at the time, adequately investigate serious concerns about the circumstances in which the BBC secured the Panorama interview with Diana, Princess of Wales .
Earlier this year, the BBC apologized to the Princess of Wales’s private secretary, Patrick Jephson, and paid him a “substantial” as compensation for the way Martin Bashir received his interview in “Panorama”.
