Online advertising regulators in Britain have announced that slogans offering a chance to meet “single Ukrainian women” is a derogatory form of expression and will not be used online.
statement published today by the authorities referred to three ads for new acquaintances on the SofiaDate online service, published since May 2022.
The first appeared on the regional website Dorset Echo alongside an image of a woman looking out from a balcony, illustrated with the text: “Ukrainian women, meet thousands of single women from Ukraine and forget about loneliness. Make yourself happy.”
The second ad appeared in the Scottish newspaper ‘The National’, showing the same image but with somewhat different text: “Ukrainian women. Connect with single people from all over the world in search of the ideal partner”.
While the third also on the pages of the daily The National, a woman was seen before sunset, with the slogan: “Ukrainian Women … Sofiadate.com.”
But the complainants said the expressions were inappropriate given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and questioned whether they were offensive, the ASA wrote, adding that Astrasoft Projects Ltd., which owns the SofiaDate network, has already removed them.
The regulator ruled that showing “Ukrainian women” dressed in such a way, referring to their loneliness, emphasizes their vulnerability, and has a possible link to sexual attraction for men.
“For this reason we decided that the slogans were offensive and therefore should not be displayed in the aforementioned form.”
Officials also said that they were concerned about the British government’s program encouraging members of the public to take in Ukrainian refugees, which has proved unsafe for single Ukrainian women.
