On the 52nd day of the hunger strike of the chief executive of the terrorist organization “November 17”, the case of Dimitris Koufontinas has divided public opinion into two parts, while it has taken on political dimensions in Greece.
On the one hand, the leader of the opposition, Alexis Tsipras, has called on the government to change its attitude towards the demands of the prisoner in question, so that Greece does not become the first European country where someone will die of hunger strike.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasizes in his recent statement that no one should seek a change in the law for a terrorist like Koufontina. Two days ago, more than 2,000 citizens “flooded” the Facebook accounts of the Greek president and prime minister with posts, seeking to make a decision to save his life.
As protests erupt daily by hundreds of people demanding that justice and the government accept the terrorist’s request to be relocated to Korridhalose prison, relatives of his victims are urging supporters to persuade him not to continue his hunger strike, and many others have the opposite attitude.
Dimitris Koufontinas has gone on strike following a ruling last December banning terrorism convicts from being held in a rural prison. He believes the purpose of the law was just that, as he was the only one in a rural prison in Volos and within a few days he was transferred to Dhomoko.
Now, in addition to having 52 days without food, there are 5 days when he asked not to take water and the doctors say that he could lose his life at any moment.
He has been charged with 200 criminal offenses in 84 acts, including murder, which he committed as a member of the terrorist organization “November 17” since the beginning of 1983. His sentence after the appeal was: 11 times life imprisonment and 25 years imprisonment for participating in 11 murders, explosions, robberies and participation in a terrorist group.
Among the victims killed by him from 1985 to 1992 was Pavlos Bakoyannis, the husband of former Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, also the sister of current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“November 17” operated in Greece during the period 1975–2002. His activities included assassinations, remote-controlled bombs, kidnappings and a significant number of robberies, killing 23 politicians, the military, police officers, diplomats, businessmen and Greek and foreign nationals.
The US State Department removed the organization from the list of foreign terrorist groups on August 26, 2015 and according to a report, “November 17 was characterized as the far-left organization responsible for the assassinations of US officials and public figures in Greece“.
