The Omicron variant of the coronavirus is rapidly spreading in the UK and is likely to become the dominant variant of COVID-19 disease by the middle of this month.
So said the UK Agency for Health Safety, on Friday (December 10th).
Data from the UK confirm that omicron is more easily transmissible than other variants, according to the agency.
Other studies suggest that AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines are less effective in preventing symptomatic infections in people exposed to Omicron, although preliminary data suggest that efficacy increases from 70 to 75 percent after booster dose of the vaccine.
The latest data show that on December 8, 568 cases were registered that may be with the Omicron variant while a week ago there had been only two cases.
“Once again, we urge anyone who may receive a booster dose of the vaccine to do so,” said Jenny Harries, the agency’s chief executive.
The agency has said their data should be handled with care as the findings are based on early analysis in a small number of cases.
In particular, the agency said scientists do not know how effective the vaccines will be in preventing a serious illness in people exposed to the Omicron variant, although they say it is expected to be significantly higher than protection against mild infections.
