British citizens choosing to stay in Ukraine should not expect a military evacuation if conflict with Russia erupts, Defense Secretary James Heappey told Sky News on Saturday.
“British citizens should leave Ukraine immediately by any means possible and should not expect, as they saw in the summer with Afghanistan, that there would be any possibility of a military evacuation,” he said.
On Friday (February 11th), the UK government advised British nationals to leave Ukraine now that the means of transport are still available and advised against any further travel there.
Heappey said no decision has yet been made on Britain’s diplomatic presence in Ukraine.
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said on Friday that British troops sent to Ukraine for training purposes would return soon.
“There will be no British troops in Ukraine if there is a conflict with Russia,” Heappey said.
US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin would speak on Saturday as Western countries warned that a war in Ukraine could flare up at any moment.
