The United States has rejected a request by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the West to lift economic sanctions on Russia.
According to the Kremlin, Putin has told Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi that Russia will launch ships with food and fertilizer to ease the food crisis around the world, but only if “politically motivated measures implemented by the West end.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that grain exports from Ukraine could start if sanctions on Russia are lifted.
However, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Russia’s naval blockade had blocked several tonnes of products, not sanctions.
According to her, there are no discussions on lifting sanctions.
“There are no talks. “This is what we did to Russia,” she said.
Russia must “immediately end its war in Ukraine,” which is affecting global food security, Jean-Pierre said.
“Russia is constantly blocking food exports from Ukrainian ports and is increasing world hunger.”
Russia and Ukraine are important exporters of cereals, so they play an important role in the supply chain.
In recent weeks, the international community has called on Russia to facilitate the export of Ukrainian wheat.
But according to Kiev, the Russian navy is blocking Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea.
Ukraine has accused Russia of blackmail and called on the West not to lift sanctions until Russia ends the war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered on February 24 what he calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded with harsh sanctions against Russia, targeting the state’s economy and Russian oligarchs.
