None of the 22 crew members were reportedly injured in a fire that broke out yesterday aboard the carrier of about 4,000 luxury vehicles from Germany to the US.
Among the Volkswagen Group’s new vehicles were 1,100 Porsches being transported until an unexplained fire forced the rapid evacuation of the crew by Portuguese authorities in the Azores.
A Porsche Group spokesman said 1,100 of their vehicles were on board, while an Audi spokesman acknowledged there were new vehicles on board, without specifying how many.
An internal Volkswagen USA email published by the media stated that there were a total of 3,965 new vehicles on board produced by VW, Porsche, Audi and Lamborghini, according to the German daily Handelsblatt.
While the specialized car magazine The Drive, reported that there were also 189 British Bentley luxury cars in the transporter, the latter owned by the German group Volkswagen.
Footage released yesterday by the Portuguese navy showed smoke coming from the back of the carrier. The ship was sailing from Emden, where the German Volkswagen plant is located, to Rhode Island, NY, according to the Marine Traffic maritime traffic tracking network.
Portuguese authorities said the fire was brought under control while not commenting further on the developments.
