The United States and its Western allies could send Ukraine up to 30 multiple-launch missile systems that have so far been very effective in destroying Russian weapons caches, a senior US congressman said.
Adam Smith, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told Radio Free Europe that the current goal is to increase the number of missile systems deployed in Ukraine to 25-30.
Smith made the comments during a visit to Kiev. He is one of several members of Congress who met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensy on July 23.
Ukraine has requested at least 50 of the high-precision missile systems, including the M270 rocket systems, the multiple rocket launcher system (MLRS) and the M142 high-mobility surface-to-air missile systems (HIMARS).
The systems can launch missiles far behind enemy lines with an accuracy of several meters, making them very effective.
The US has already delivered a number of HIMARS systems to Ukraine and recently approved the delivery of four more. Western allies have delivered some M270s to Ukraine.
Smith did not provide a time frame for the delivery of the remaining systems./Rel
