Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to deploy the country’s nuclear defense forces in a state of high alert in response to “aggressive statements” by NATO countries.
The order, which was announced by the state-run Tass news agency, came during a meeting between Putin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russian Armed Forces Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
Speaking on state television on Sunday, he said: SAs you can see, not only are Western countries taking hostile measures against our country in the economic dimension – illegal sanctions that everyone knows about. But even the highest officials of the main NATO countries are allowing themselves to make aggressive statements about our country. For this reason I order the Minister of Defense and the Chief of General Staff to place the preventive forces on special combat duty.
Putin has warned foreign countries not to interfere in his ongoing occupation of Ukraine, saying it could lead to “consequences they have never seen.” He has positioned anti-aircraft missiles and other advanced missile systems in Belarus and deployed his fleet in the Black Sea in an effort to prevent a Western intervention in Ukraine.
Zelensky: Ukrainian and Russian delegations to meet without preconditions!
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that he had decided that the Ukrainian and Russian delegations would meet without preconditions at the Belarusian border.
“Politicians have agreed that the Ukrainian delegation will meet with the Russian delegation without preconditions on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, near the Pripyat River,” his office said.
“Alexander Lukashenko has taken responsibility for ensuring that all aircraft, helicopters and missiles stationed on Belarusian territory will remain on the ground during the Ukrainian delegation’s journey, meeting and return.”
