Valerie Reid is the lady who could not stand the idea of old dogs dying alone, so she turned her home into an animal shelter.
She already runs a charity for older dogs in Missouri, USA, caring for about 80 dogs at a time.
The camp was set up in 2017 after Valerie failed to find a home for her late father’s Doberman dog.
“My husband and I could no longer keep animals and no one took my father’s dog,” she said.
While now Valeria accepts all older dogs of deceased owners or who are housed in nursing homes.
“The dogs live openly with us in the two buildings. “Everywhere we go, they go and are treated as part of the family.”
“Our goal is to prepare them for the end of life, as none of us has a guaranteed tomorrow,” says the woman.
“We expect older dogs to go to the other world with love and care. “Of course it hurts but it is also an honor to take care of them.”
“I wanted to help the dogs that were in my father’s dog situation and I did not know there were so many. “It’s actually a forgotten part of the animal welfare world.”
So Valerie and her husband Josh left their home in Kansas to settle in the animal shelter in Missouri, which is now their home.
They already have a 1,000-square-foot property and a 500-square-foot dog-only building.
“The shelter started to grow, becoming bigger and bigger over time. “I really like that I have so many dogs that love me.”
Valerie says she wants the dogs to leave the world knowing they were valued and admired.
She already has 17 full-time employees caring for her 80 dogs all the time.
“We all need a plan for the future, not only for our spouses and children but also for our animals. “Death is not scary, it is a privilege to grow old, we all have to face it.”
“Sometimes dogs become overweight, as do their medical expenses, but we hope to make others aware of the needs of our shelter,” she adds.
