Pairi Daiza Zoo in the Wallonia region today advertised “special measures” to protect animals and visitors from the heat that has gripped the country, such as frozen food, fruit thrown into water or added water sprinklers.
The garden animals seemed to enjoy the frozen licks most, which the monkeys in particular consumed almost as much as the humans.
The severe heat wave has caused dozens of fires in Western Europe.
Britain recorded its highest temperature on record at 40 degrees, up from 38.7C, which was recorded in the east of England in 2019.
Even in France, some cities recorded the highest ever temperatures yesterday, such as the northwestern region of Brittany where 40 degrees C was recorded.
Countries remain on alert for people’s health and fires that are believed to start from high temperatures, as are currently happening in France, Greece, Portugal and Spain.
