The founders of vaccine manufacturer BioNTech will be honored with the highest order of merit for their commitment against the coronavirus pandemic.
The decoration ceremony is attended by German President Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday. Özlem Türeci and Ugur Sahin, founders of the biotechnology group are thus honored for the short-term development and licensing of a major vaccine against Covid 19, produced in collaboration with the American Pfizer. Türeci and Sahin have made a “decisive contribution to limiting the Corona pandemic” through “their tireless efforts”, is the motivation that accompanies this award.
The delivery of the highest German order of merit for the entrepreneurial couple by Steinmeier will take place on March 19 at the Bellevue Palace. Türeci and Sahin founded BioNTech in 2008 to develop anti-cancer therapies. The aim of their research was and is that instead of chemotherapy or radiation, the body be trained individually and specifically to fight cancer itself. To this end, the development of a process using mRNA began and the same new method was used to develop the Sars-CoV-2 vaccine.
