A new United Nations report says about 2,000 children recruited by Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen have died on the battlefield between January 2020 and May 2021.
The report was circulated to the United Nations Security Council on January 29, and it said the rebels continue to control the camps and encourage young people to fight against the Yemeni National Government.
The internationally recognized government in Yemen and the Huthi rebels have been involved in the war since 2014, when insurgents invaded the capital, Sanaa.
The Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, supporting the ousted government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and fighting the rebels.
The conflict has left thousands dead and has created one of the most serious humanitarian crises.
In the report, UN experts said they investigated several summer camps in schools and a mosque where Huthi rebels recruit children to fight.
“Children are instructed to shout the slogan ‘Death to America, death to Israel, death to the Jews, victory to Islam,'” the panel of experts said.
“In one camp, seven-year-olds are taught how to clean weapons and use rockets.”
