Amela is in the fourth grade without her best friend who has left Albania. The 9-year-old wants her back.
“My friend ran away with her family. I am bored. “He told me he would come again but it seems to me that he lied to me,” she said.
In the school year 2021-2022, there are more than 25 thousand empty chairs left in the classrooms. The most significant drop in students is felt in the gymnasium where there are less than 17 thousand high school students. While in 9-year schools from 286 thousand children who have been years, the number has dropped to 278 thousand.
“We are less students because they have gone abroad or there are some who have even changed schools. “From 31 we are 27 today”, say the students.
Although previously there was overcrowding, the number of students has decreased in the educational institutions of the city, not only because of emigration or because there are fewer births, but also because of the regionalization of schools; as first- and first-year student enrollments were made by place of residence. This would somehow save rural schools from closing.
For example, in the Qemal Stafa Gymnasium, ranked as one of the best public schools in the capital, there are today 1120 students, 100 high school students less than a year old.
