Tens of thousands of believers filled the Great Mosque of Mecca yesterday for the night of the 27th of the month of Ramadan, the largest gathering since the launch of the Covid-19 virus.
Impressive views showed believers praying and walking around the Kaaba in its center.
The large number of pilgrims arriving was seen only with aerial photographs where many more were gathered in the buildings around the Kaaba.
Umrah, or the 27th Night of Ramadan, is known in Arabic as ‘Laylat Al Qadr’, and is considered one of the holiest evenings of the Islamic calendar. This marks the time when Muslims believe that the holy book of the Qur’an came down from heaven to earth, and when its lines were revealed to the world by the Prophet Muhammad.
On the day marking the last week of Ramadan, believers from all over the world gather in Mecca’s holiest temple for prayer and reflection.
Similar gatherings of Muslims took place in many parts of the world yesterday, including the troubled temple in Jerusalem.
Ramadan prayers there have been hampered by the rituals of the Jewish Resurrection ceremony, which is also performed at the Al Aqsa Mosque, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, in the large presence of the Israeli police army.
Fasting the month of Ramadan is one of the five main pillars of the Islamic religion, along with the other four which are faith, prayer, charity and pilgrimage.
The footage from the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem also showed thousands of people praying under the dome of Laylat al-Qadr, as well as believers in Gaza, at the Sayed al-Hashim Mosque.
