The eruption of the Cujmbre Vieja volcano in La Palma of the Canary Islands, launched in September, was finally declared closed by authorities after three months.
The decision was made over the past 10 days without lava flow, seismic activity or significant sulfur dioxide emissions. The La Palmas emergency, however, still cannot be considered closed, due to the tremendous damage caused by this volcanic eruption.
Finally, we have a kind of emotional relief, and hope, said the director of the commission for volcanic emergencies, Julio Perez.
“Now we can focus entirely on reconstruction efforts,” he said. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the blast as “the best Christmas present”.
“We will work together, all institutions to repair the damage and restore the splendor of the island of La Palmas,” he said. Agriculture and tourism are the main sectors of the Canary Islands, a popular holiday destination for many Europeans thanks to its mild climate and beautiful nature.
