During the pandemic year 2020, Tirana offered the highest level of salaries nationwide, while Lezha the lowest, INSTAT reported in a recent publication on regional statistics.
The average monthly salary in Albania, in 2020, was 53,662 ALL. The region of Tirana has the highest average monthly salary (60,857 ALL), while the regions of Lezha and Shkodra have the lowest salary (approximately 42,728 ALL and 43,213 ALL). Compared to the monthly average at the national level, Tirana Region has the highest average monthly salary with 13.4%, while Lezha Region has the lowest salary 20.4%.
Referring to data by gender, during 2020, men have the highest salary in the Region of Tirana (62,986 ALL) and the lowest in the Region of Lezha (42,349 ALL), as well as women have the highest salary in the Region of Tirana (58,309 ALL) and lowest in the region of Lezha (43,175 ALL). In Durrës Region, men are paid more than women by about 13.9%, while in Elbasan Region men are paid less than women by -5%.
Gjirokastra Region has the largest salary increase of 4.8% in 2020 and Fier Region has a decrease of 2.6%. Wages increased by about 4% in the region of Shkodra, Lezha by 3.2 while other regions had an increase of 2 to 3%. Studies on the average gross monthly salary show that financial and insurance activities have higher salaries than other sectors. This sector has the highest salaries in the Region of Tirana and the lowest in the Region of Dibra.
While the lowest wages are in the sector of agriculture, forestry and fisheries. In this sector the lowest salaries are in Tirana region and the highest in Shkodra region. Regional wage characteristics are similar to labor market characteristics. The highest employment rate was registered in Gjirokastra Region (69.0%), followed by Korça Region (61.0%). The lowest rate is recorded in the Region of Lezha (33.7%) and Dibra (44.7%).
During the period 2018-2020, the highest increase in the employment rate was recorded in Gjirokastra Region, with 6.0 percentage points, while the largest decrease was recorded in Lezha (-8.0 percentage points). The increase in the employment rate during this period for both men and women is higher in the Gjirokastra region (+6.6 and +5.4 pp respectively).
