March 14 is a special festive day in Albania, known as “Summer Day” and celebrates the arrival of the spring season.
Summer Day was considered the beginning of the year according to the ancient Albanian calendar, and this day was celebrated many centuries before the birth of Christianity.
But this year, Summer Day comes at higher prices. A blockchain in Elbasan, but also in other cities will cost more as a result of the increase in the price of sugar and butter.
Whether or not it has to do with fuels, whether or not it has to do with imports, every product has already taken off.
Confectioners say they can not afford the cost and in cases where prices will not rise, the weight of the product will be reduced to compensate for the loss.
Summer Day is in one of the oldest traditions of Elbasan. The origin of the holiday has its traces in the temple of Zana e Malit built near the river Shkumbin in Elbasan. Zana was the God of hunting, forests and nature and appeared only on March 14, which marked the beginning of Summer, this at that time only two seasons were known, winter and summer.
This legend has been passed down from generation to generation and the Summer Day festival is known for its tradition and special cultural values. The symbol of this holiday is ballokumja, a dessert made with corn flour. For this special day every family has its own recipe preserved over the years, which they consider a source of pride. They used to go and celebrate only in Elbasan, but now it has become a national holiday, where it is celebrated in every city of Albania. This holiday has become known to tourists visiting Albania for this special day.
