Former Moldovan pro-Russian President Igor Dodon has been handcuffed in Chisinau on suspicion of high treason.
Dodoni was elected president of the country in 2016 and held the post until 2020, when he lost the election to Maia Sandu, a former World Bank employee who ran with the promise of rapprochement with the EU and the fight against corruption.
In those elections, Sandu, who was the candidate of the Party of Action and Solidarity, was supported by former European Council President Donald Tusk, while Dodon had the support of Vladimir Putin.
Dodon’s arrest has caused concern in Moscow, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said he hoped his rights would be respected. According to the Interfax news agency, after the reopening of the bribery investigation, checks were carried out on Dodon’s house and the offices of the Moldovan-Russian Business Union, established by him this year.
Dodoni is accused of taking money from oligarch and then-Democratic Party leader Vladimir Plahotniuc to fund his party. The allegations are based on several video recordings.
Moldova has been hit by several political crises as well as a $ 1 billion banking fraud scheme, which equates to almost 15% of the country’s annual economic output.
