About 600,000 Albanians have chosen to leave the country in the last decade alone.
The figures are truly dramatic in the 30-year history of Albanian exodus. According to INSTAT, 1.68 million Albanians currently live abroad and constitute what is considered the new diaspora, emigrants after the 90s.
During 2019 alone, INSTAT reported that the diaspora grew by about 2.6%.
Unlike the first years when Albanians targeted America, Italy and Greece after 2015, Germany returned to the paradise of Albanian emigrants with an annual rate of about 35%.
This has caused the share of Albanian emigrants in Germany in the total number of emigrants to quadruple from 1.3% to 4.2%.
But the new wave of emigration over the last decade has affected the educated to alarming levels as well.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in a report of 2020 found that Albania was ranked fourth in the world for the increase in the emigration rate of persons with high working abilities for the period 2000 to 2016.
According to the same report, Albania is ranked among the top 10 countries in the world for the rate of departure of intellectuals, having this indicator 38.1%, leaving behind Mozambique or Somalia.
Also detailed data on emigration to the Western Balkans analyzed by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies show that 40% of Albanians who emigrated during the period 2012-2019 were educated.
This report revealed that emigration to the region occurs mainly between those with lower and secondary education, with the exception of Albania and Serbia, where the educated emigrate.
But mass layoffs have led to a depletion of the labor market.
