For more than 30 years in Albania, the living wage has not been applied for people of any category to live with dignity. Let us first explain what the subsistence minimum is.
“The subsistence minimum is a value which refers to the amount of monthly expenses an individual and his family spend. We in Albania have a functional minimum living term but we have not developed it as terminology and further as a function. The subsistence minimum is the reference of all social policies undertaken by the state towards the population who are the most vulnerable or who have a limited income“, Said Teuta Nunaj Kortoçi, pedagogue / economics expert.
“What should be the basic level of income that an individual or family should have in order to survive with dignity, in a society where we say the odds are equal but the competition is very strong. For all the losers of this society who can not succeed in this race, the state of social welfare determines a basic income which will enable each of the citizens to live with dignity.“, Said Pano Soko, economic expert.
Governments have never taken the trouble to figure out what the subsistence minimum is and then implement it. However an attempt was made in 2016 by the ombudsman to extract how much is the living wage in our country.
“Unfortunately this legal obligation has never been fulfilled. There was an initiative of the ombudsman, who according to calculations shows that the subsistence minimum is about 17-18 thousand ALL “, said Selami Xhepa, economics expert.
“It turns out that the subsistence minimum would now have to be 17,854 ALL and this would translate into a life which in its minimum would guarantee a basic living of every citizen“, Said Adriatik Lapaj, lawyer.
At a time when we are discussing the dignified survival of Albanian families, the gap between rich and poor is widening. On the one hand we have families living in misery, and on the other we have families who do not know how to waste money.
