The top American general, Mark Milley, has issued a warning recently about China’s intentions towards the US, saying that Beijing has become more aggressive and the number of Chinese wiretapping has increased significantly recently.
“China is increasing in its aggressiveness in its rhetoric, but also in its activity,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley told a group of reporters traveling with him in Asia on Friday.
“The number of Chinese intercepts at sea and in the air has increased significantly over the past five years,” Milley said, although he did not provide further details on the figure.
Milley’s strong comments underscore the Biden administration’s efforts to make confronting China a key strategic priority, and they come as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to be preparing to lead a congressional delegation to Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing claims as his own.
President Joe Biden has suggested that the US military believes a possible trip by Pelosi and other lawmakers would pose security risks.
The Pentagon has declined to say whether officials have directly briefed the California Democrat, but officials say the concerns include creating a no-fly zone or increasing unsafe wiretapping of US and allied ships and aircraft in the Pacific region.
