Upon arrival in Elbasan, the Ukrainian athletes immediately started training on the premises of the stadium “Elbasan Arena”.
A team of 10 people, coaches and athletes in various sports disciplines, have not hesitated even from the rainy weather to continue their normal training sessions, to make up for lost time. For 17-year-old Maria Larina, who practices in the discipline of throwing the ball, training is very important as the championships are near.
Maria Larina: It is very important to continue training because I am part of the Ukrainian National Team and we need to continue training because the racing season is approaching and we need to prepare for the World and European Championships.
But Maria has left behind her family and her country. The only wish is to go back there and end this war.
Maria Larina: We have to go home. We must stop this war because many people are losing their lives and it is very terrible, dangerous. But even if we have to train we have to go back to Ukraine.
Sport club Elbasani, meanwhile, has created the conditions for a more comfortable training, but also taking care of the social side of these young people who come from great traumas.
Elbasan has become the first city in the country to welcome Ukrainian athletes fleeing the war, who will stay in the city for as long as necessary.
