The Minister of Economy, Delina Ibrahimaj and the Minister of Agriculture, Frida Krifca in a statement to the media this Friday spoke about the increase of food prices and agricultural inputs.
Ibrahimaj stressed that no abuse by businesses will be allowed in this difficult time for the whole world.
“Tomorrow we will continue the meetings in order to close a process for the instrument that will make transparency about the prices of basket products in retail outlets. This is an unusual situation, in which we would not want to intervene and that needs monitoring. The war creates uncertainty and has led to high price increases for some basket products.
These prices do not in all cases indicate an increase in prices in international markets. The purpose of the board is to determine the instrument that will control prices and will not allow them to rise inconsistently with those of imports. The market is not easily monitored, some of the traders are direct importers, some are processors and some are packers and sellers. The board will be tasked with monitoring production costs for all major traders and monitoring profit margins.
The companies present at the meeting today have agreed to have a minimum profit margin on the most important basic products. We can not control the price, it comes from imported inflation. In the following we will inform about all the activity of the board and the monitoring instrument. There will be a mechanism that will determine how retailers will be controlled to prevent abuse. “We have set up a guarantee that will be used by the leading traders to guarantee their purchases that the products will not be missing in the medium term”, said the Minister of Economy.
She added that a guarantee has been set for traders not to miss products.
“We can not control the price, the price in Albania comes from imported inflation and throughout the days of analysis we have seen how much inflation has increased in all world markets. We can not set the prices we would like, arbitrary prices because we are in a market economy. In the coming days we will keep you informed on board activity and instruments of action. We will cooperate with traders so that it is not abused. “We have set a guarantee that will be used by the main traders, to guarantee their purchases and the products in the Albanian market not to be missing for a medium term, for the Albanian families to pay what they have to pay and not a penny more”, added Inrahimaj.
Businesses have significantly increased the prices of basket products, creating difficulties in earning a living.
Nine oil importing and manufacturing companies today are under investigation for abuse for price increases.
The investigation follows the establishment of a special board to control the prices of the basket, which also includes vegetable oil, to avoid abuses in this period of crisis at the expense of consumers until the situation normalizes.
