The images of the citizen throwing stones at the tiger at the zoo in the capital, which has only been open for a few days, brought back to mind the numerous cases of animal abuse, often posted on social networks and by the abusers themselves.
This way of behaving towards animals that is punished by everyone who watches it, is also punished by law.
“These are punishable acts in the Republic of Albania based on the laws in force, we already have the law on animal welfare approved 6 years ago and it is understood that rape of animals is a criminal offense, anyone who commits such acts violates the law“, Says Dritan Laçi, UB Lecturer, veterinary medicine.
The Parks and Recreation Agency, which manages the zoo, sent the film footage of the previous day to the prosecutor’s office.
To prevent such cases, there is no assigned employee in the garden, but next to him stands a municipal police patrol, which is signaled in case of need.
Keeping a pet requires responsibility. But there have been few cases when the owners themselves show negligence towards them.
“We need to have a very peaceful approach to animals, we need to take care of them both in terms of health and in terms of when they are part of the environment where we live in terms of food and different treatments and needs they may have, but we need to identify and cases when violated and notify the relevant structures“, Adds Laçi.
The most recent case was of a 20-year-old man who was prosecuted by police station no. 4 in Tirana for mistreating a dog.
