The departure of many police officers in downtown Ottawa by truckers was seen as an attempt to quell a nearly three-week protest against Canada’s restrictions on COVID-19. Police officers warned protesters to leave.
“It’s time for these illegal and dangerous activities to stop,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Parliament, not far from where hundreds of large trucks were parked.
“These protests are a threat to our economy. “They are a threat to public safety,” Trudeau said. Many of the protesters who were on the streets reacted to the warnings of the police.
The protests started as a sign of dissatisfaction with the decision for compulsory vaccination of truck drivers. About 90 percent of Canada’s 120,000 truck drivers are vaccinated against coronavirus.
