One of the Russian Navy’s most important warships has suffered severe damage and has been evacuated urgently after what Russia describes as just on-board fire, but which Ukraine claims was the result of its own missile strike.
The Moscow-based remote-controlled missile cruiser, the pride of the Russian fleet was engulfed by a series of explosions as the flames reached as far as the ammunition on board.
State media TASS and RIA, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported that the ship was severely damaged by the incident that the cause of the fire is being investigated, while not providing information on possible casualties. But Ukrainian officials claim that it was the ground-launched missiles that struck Moscow, which has great symbolic significance for Ukraine as the warship involved in the famous incident with soldiers on Snake Island, who refused to surrender to the invaders.
Whatever the cause of the fire, analysts say it hits hard in the heart of the Russian Navy as well as in the country’s national pride, comparable to the loss of a World War II warship by the U.S. Navy or an aircraft carrier today.
“Only the loss of a ballistic missile submarine or of Kutznetsov, the only Russian aircraft carrier, would deal a more serious blow to Russian morale and the reputation of the navy in the Russian public,” said Carl Schuster, the former director of operations at US Pacific Command Joint Intelligence Center.
According to the BBC meanwhile, Moscow claims to have taken control of Mariupol, but the defense ministry in Kiev claims that Ukrainian troops are still resisting.
Fighting in Mariupol turned into rubble is reportedly continuing fiercely in the Azovstal industrial zone, and if it falls, then Russia will indeed have the entire city in hand.
