In a letter to the Foreign Ministry, Kiev lists many wishes and demands that Germany consider the request as soon as possible.
Unlike other NATO partners, Germany refuses to supply Ukraine with weapons. Now the German government received a request from Kiev. The Ukrainian Embassy has formally requested support in the form of arms supplies. The Süddeutsche Zeitung quotes a letter from the Foreign Ministry in which the embassy lists a number of weapons that Ukraine wants.
The letter states that due to the “extremely tense security situation and the threat of Russian aggression”, the embassy demands that “this request be considered as soon as possible”, the article of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” states.
Weapon systems of a defensive nature
The Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin is looking for medium-range anti-aircraft missile defense systems, portable anti-aircraft systems, anti-drone weapons, microwave destruction systems, electronic tracking systems, as well as night-vision equipment, surveillance cameras and ammunition.
The German government has promised Ukraine only to send 5,000 military helmets. This is a “very clear signal that we are on your side,” said Defense Secretary Christine Lambrecht. The Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin welcomed the surrender, but at the same time criticized it as a “symbolic gesture”.
In the coalition agreement, the German federal government consisting of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP have decided not to send weapons to crisis regions./ DW
