Russia’s ambassador to the UN claims that Moscow has evidence that Ukraine is developing biological weapons. At the UN security meeting at Russia’s request, Vasily Nebenzya said Russian forces had found evidence of a network of 30 laboratories aimed at developing some deadly diseases.
He said “very dangerous biological experiments” had been carried out in these countries in coordination with the US. But the US has called such claims by Russia “ridiculous” and warns that Moscow could use them to justify its forthcoming attack on Ukraine.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to the UN Security Council said:
”Russia is trying to use this to legitimize misinformation and to deceive people justifying President Putin’s war against the Ukrainian people. Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program. There are no US-backed Ukrainian biological weapons laboratories. Neither near the Russian border nor anywhere elser ”.
Thomas-Greenfield said it was Russia that could actually use chemical or biological agents in Ukraine.
“It is Russia that has long held a biological weapons program in violation of international law“, She said.
Biological weapons are different from chemical weapons, for example the deliberate use of a dangerous pathogen to harm a certain population.
