Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on April 4 that Russia was preparing to launch a new offensive in eastern Ukraine, in a bid to take control of Kharkiv and encircle Ukrainian forces.
According to Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, Russia is attacking the cities of Rubizhne and Popasna in the Luhansk region, paving the way for an attack on Severdonyeck, the regional capital. Also, according to this official, Russian forces are gathering in order to take control of Mariupol, the Ukrainian port city that is surrounded by the Russian army.
Sereodonjeck and Mariupol are located at the northern and southern ends of the “line of contact” in Ukraine, which is several hundred kilometers long.
Motuzyanyk said Russian units were entering Russia from Belarus and Moscow was preparing fuel and ammunition reserves in areas bordering eastern Ukraine.
Russia last week said it would withdraw from the suburbs of Kiev and Chernihiv and focus its military operations in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia wants to take control of eastern and southern Ukraine.
