A Ukrainian court has frozen the property of former President Petro Poroshenko as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of high treason.
Poroshenko denies the allegations, REL reports.
“The court has decided to seize the suspected property, which belongs to him“, Said the Office of the Prosecutor General through a statement issued on January 6.
The State Bureau of Investigation said last month that Poroshenko had been formally investigated for high treason, accusing him of “facilitating activities” for separatists fighting government forces in the conflict in eastern Ukraine that erupted in 2014. which has so far claimed the lives of over 13,200 citizens.
During his presidency, Poroshenko allegedly helped separatists sell $ 54 million worth of coal to Kiev between 2014 and 2015, the statement said.
Poroshenko has denied the allegations and accused Ukrainian authorities of crossing “red lines” by accusing him of high treason.
Last month, prosecutors asked a Ukrainian court to arrest Poroshenko and set $ 37 million bail.
Poroshenko has been out of Ukraine since December last year and has not yet commented on today’s decision.
He is already a lawmaker and leader of the opposition. If found guilty of the charges, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
Poroshenko has said he plans to return to Ukraine on January 17.
