A Ukrainian sailor in Spain’s Mallorca has sunk a 7m-euro luxury yacht owned by its Russian owner, days after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The super-luxury yacht, named Lady Anastasia, has five cabins and is owned by Alexander Mijeev, a former head of the Russian Helicopter Corporation. The latter, in 2016, undertook to supply the Russian state with weapons.
This was also the reason why the sailor, identified as D. Taras O, allegedly opened the ship’s valves causing it to drown partially, an action for which he was arrested.
He opened a valve in the engine room and a second one where the crew lives and allegedly asked three other crew members, also Ukrainians, to leave the ship. To make sure the ship would sink, he turned off the fuel valves and electricity on the ship, according to The Sun.
“The owner of this ship is a criminal who makes a living by selling weapons and now they kill Ukrainians“, The sailor is said to have said at the time of arrest.
In court, the sailor, who has worked for the ship for a decade, said he blamed his owner Mijeev for producing weapons used to attack Ukraine.
He said he had seen news on television how a Russian cruise missile hit an apartment block and assumed the missile had been made by his boss. The sailor recalled living in a similar apartment in Kiev and sought revenge on his boss.
