The Ukrainian soldiers who were deployed to defend the Black Sea snake island, who were initially thought to have been killed, are “in good health”.
In a statement to the media, the news was confirmed by the Ukrainian Navy, according to which the soldiers on the island managed to repel two attacks by Russian forces, but were eventually forced to surrender “due to lack of ammunition.”
The statement said Russian forces had completely destroyed the islands’ infrastructure, such as lanterns, towers and antennas.
Over the weekend, Ukraine’s Border Guard Service said it had received information that all 82 soldiers could be alive.
Russian state media have revealed footage of their arrival in Sevastopol, Crimea where they are being held captive.
Snake Island is located about 48 kilometers off the southern tip of the Ukrainian continent in the Black Sea. This island is 300 kilometers west of Crimea, a Ukrainian territory that Russia annexed in 2014.
Although 46 hectares in size, a report last year by the Atlantic Council institute considered it “the key to Ukraine’s maritime territorial claims” in the Black Sea.
