U.S. authorities on Monday indicted Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, accusing him of exporting two U.S. planes without a license to Russia, in defiance of US sanctions on Moscow in response to its aggression in Ukraine.
According to the US Department of Commerce, Mr. Abramovich in February had placed his Russian-born children as beneficiaries of the “shell entities” that owned the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Gulfstream G650 ER, although they remained under his control.
Manhattan federal prosecutors are already seeking to seize the two planes, according to documents submitted to the court.
The allegations come as US authorities continue to put pressure on powerful businessmen with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin to persuade Moscow to halt its actions in Ukraine, which the Kremlin calls a special military operation. The United States has not imposed sanctions on Mr Abramovich.
