At least 600 housing units, a shopping mall and a hotel have been burned by fires that have been spread by strong winds in the US state of Colorado.
The fire, which broke out yesterday morning in Boulder County, reached populated areas in a short time, with winds of up to 169 kilometers per hour.
The spread of the fire was also accelerated by the collapse of the transmission lines. More than 30,000 residents in three suburbs outside the capital Denver were forced to evacuate, the public news agency NPR reported.
While the National Meteorological Service for the City of Denver and Boulder County called the situation in the area life-threatening, the Boulder County Emergency Management Office ordered residents of Louisville and Superior City to evacuate the area immediately.
Residents of much of Broomfield are also now under compulsory evacuation order.
“Because of the size, intensity and presence of the fire in such a densely populated area, we would not be surprised if there were any injured or dead,” Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said this morning.
At least seven people were injured and taken to hospital yesterday.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has declared a state of emergency in response to the fires.
