US President Joe Biden has announced that he will elect Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first woman of color in US history to head the country’s highest court.
“I am pleased to announce the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. “She is one of the brightest legal minds in the country,” Biden said.
Jackson, 51, was appointed to federal court in 2013, and was backed by three Republican senators last year for head of the Appeals court.
Her appointment is not expected to change the ideological composition of the judiciary, but President Biden says it is a great moment for her.
The White House hopes the appointment will bring positive media coverage ahead of the president’s keynote address to Congress on Tuesday.
The administration sees this as a turning point from a series of bad news in recent months as Biden’s domestic agenda has stalled amid inflation and falling support figures, writes France24.
