A US court on Thursday found African-American gay actor Jussie Smollett guilty of falsely claiming to have been physically assaulted by two white men who he said had used expressions by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The actor of the series “Empire” had told the police that he was attacked on January 29, 2019 by two men who had insulted him with “racist and homophobic” insults, telling him that “This is a MAGA place!” which refers to the slogan of the former Republican president.
But after much evidence against the denunciation the judge’s prosecutors ruled that Smollet had staged a hate crime to increase his salary on the television network, paying $ 3,500 to two brothers with whom he was friends, to put the fraud into practice.
Former United States President Donald Trump today called Smollett’s fake denunciation “a hate crime in the opposite direction” following a court ruling.
“This is in fact a hate crime, a kind of hate crime in reverse. “He’s not going to get away with it,” Trump said in a telephone interview with Fox News.
“If a Republican did that, he would be sentenced to 25 years in prison,” Trump added.
“This was an absolute deception by a man who sought sympathy to extend the contract of a funny TV series when things were not going well,” Trump said ironically.
Smollett had said in his denunciation that the two attackers wearing “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) hats had beaten him, tied a rope around his neck and sprayed him with laundry detergent.
The Chicago court convicted Smollett of six offenses including false denunciation, following the testimony of 13 witnesses.
