U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday paid tribute to former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as his coffin was placed in the dome of the Capitol, the U.S. Capitol building. Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, died last month at the age of 82 from pancreatic cancer.
On Wednesday afternoon, President Joe Biden went to the Capitol to pay homage to the late senator. He made no comment. Vice President Kamala Harris also went to the Capitol earlier Wednesday to honor the former Democratic Senate leader.
“Few people have influenced the rules of operation of this institution as our dear friend from Nevada,” said current Senate Majority Leader Democrat Chuck Schumer. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had previously said that former Senator Reid was an “important figure.”
The ceremony was closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Biden, along with former President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Schumer, delivered speeches at the funeral of former Senator Reid in Las Vegas on Saturday. The late Senator Harry Reid came from a poor family and served for four decades in Congress, eventually rising to the highest senate position, that of majority leader.
He is perhaps best known for the efforts that led to the passage of President Obama’s health care bill in 2010. Former Senator Reid is the 34th person to be honored at the Capitol.
