Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken agreed on Saturday on the need to strengthen their countries’ alliance in a challenging security environment in the region, a Japanese government official said.
Chief diplomats Hayashi and Blinken held talks as they attended the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in the English city of Liverpool.
In the face of China’s military rise and North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Monday that he plans to strengthen Japan’s defense position by considering alternatives, including the ability to hit adversary bases.
They did not discuss the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, the official said.
